Through that fortune of timing, I discovered Scuola-Cittá Pestalozzi in November, 2000. I entered the school’s garden to the curious stares of children and recorded these young faces for the next eight years.
My goal was to explore a child’s freedom of expression both individually and within the dynamics of a group. To record those moments in life when a child first ventures outside of the safety of the home and becomes a part of a new community in school and on the playground.
Founded by Ernesto Codignola in 1945, Scuola-Città Pestalozzi was established to offer a social service to the poor families of Santa Croce in Firenze. The school’s infrastructure was based on democracy, with a co-management of the school by adults and pupils similar to the workings of a city.
